Cheese Strata
It's VERY difficult to make this a low-fat dish and still have it taste great.... I only prepare this once "every blue moon," as a rare treat. Using Morningstar Farms® Breakfast Patties (crumbled) in place of the pork sausage will slash the calories to 436, fat to 21.3 grams, and cholesterol to 141 mg.
(Serves 6-8)
1 lb. bulk pork sausage
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
4 cups soft bread crumbs (6 slices bread, crusts removed, torn into
½-inch pieces)
1½ cups shredded Sharp Cheddar cheese (reduced fat)
3 eggs
2 cups milk (1% milk fat)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon pepper
Preheat oven to 350° F.
In a skillet, sauté the sausage, breaking it up into smaller pieces. Drain off the fat. Mix the mustard with the sausage and set aside.
Grease a 2-quart baking dish, and distribute the bread crumbs evenly in the dish. Layer the sausage over the bread, and sprinkle with the cheese.
In a medium bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper and Worcestershire. Pour the mixture evenly over the ingredients in the baking dish. Let stand for at least 30 minutes at room temperature, or overnight in the refrigerator.
Bake for about 1 hour or until the eggs are set. Cut into squares and serve.
