Bavarian Apple Torte
(Serves 8)
½ cup margarine or butter
1/3 cup sugar
¼ teaspoon vanilla
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 (8-oz.) package of cream cheese, softened
¼ cup sugar
1 egg
½ teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon
4 cups peeled apple slices
¼ cup slivered almonds
Preheat the oven to 450° F.
Cream the margarine, 1/3 cup sugar and ¼ teaspoon vanilla. Blend in the flour. Spread the dough onto the bottom and sides of a 9-inch spring form pan.
Combine the softened cream cheese and ¼ cup sugar; mix well. Blend in the egg and ½ teaspoon vanilla. Pour the mixture into the pastry-lined pan.
Combine the 1/3 cup sugar with the cinnamon. Toss the apples in the sugar mixture, and layer the apples over the cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle with almonds, then bake for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to 400° F and continue baking for 25 minutes. Cool before removing the rim of the pan.
